Floods, apocalyptic texts and visions, nature, life and death, goats, mythology, flying things, eschatological and apocryphal texts, ecstatic visionaries, high spirited rosy cheeked creatures of the flesh, tarot, Japanese landscapes; those are the things of inspiration. Contemplating the past, communing with the dead, the cave painters, the Egyptians, the Babylonians, the Medievalists, the 16th century court painters. I love the ghosts of the German expressionists, Vincent Van Gogh and the Japanese woodblock printers.
Outsiders; those who create without reward and have no thought for it. Driven by passion and the unseen forces that determine them. These I find more inspiring than today’s self willed, self conscious, self branding and promoting instagram/art fair artists or the academy careerists. Occultists, mystics, mythologists, natural philosophers, adventurers, folks who live by their own rules, are not these the people who truly inspire art?
